Fjords are formed when glaciers carve the ground into huge valleys. When the valley floor is below sea level, the intrusion of seawater creates deep fjords along the coast.

Norwegian fjords were formed during the Ice Age through the erosion caused by huge glaciers that covered the northern part of the European continent throughout tens of thousands of years, at a rate of half a meter every 1,000 years.

Norway's four fjords—Geirangerfjord, Sonnenfjord, Hardangerfjord, and Rüsselfjord—were named by National Geographic magazine in 2004 as the "Top of the World's Unspoiled Natural Beauty."

Geirangerfjord, located north of Bergen on the southwest coast of Norway, is one of the most beautiful and mysterious Norwegian fjords. The fjord stretches for 16 kilometers, with mountains rising over 1,500 meters above sea level on both sides. Geirangerfjord is renowned for its numerous waterfalls, such as the "Groom's Veil" and the "Seven Sisters," which cascade down steep rock faces into the fjord.

At the top of the fjord is the village of Geiranger, accessible only by a 1,000-meter-long road that winds down the mountain slope. It attracts many tourists who visit on foot during the summer. The surrounding area is also home to the Brickesdal Glacier.

A boat trip from Härheit takes you along one of the most beautiful fjords in the world, with towering, twisting rock faces on both sides, lush forests near the end of autumn, and the occasional abandoned farmhouse or two among the cliffs.

Sonnenfjord is the longest and deepest fjord globally, stretching for a total length of 240 kilometers with a maximum depth of 1,308 meters. The mountains and valleys on both sides are high and deep, and the valley floor has steep slopes and a long vertical topography. Sonnenfjord is the name of a fjord trunk, and the most famous among the smaller nearby fjords is the Narelle Fjord, which measures only 250 meters at its narrowest point. The Great Fjord carves its path through a bare and untouched landscape, with most of the mountains along its sides towering above the water, seemingly immersed in twilight throughout the day. Sonnenfjord is surreal, with snow-capped mountains, flocks of seagulls, gorges, icefalls, and often lingering mists. If you're lucky, you may even spot whales.

Hardangerfjord is 179 kilometers long and is the gentlest of the four major fjords, offering idyllic views. It is said that in spring, the fruit trees on the hillsides on both sides of the fjord bloom with flowers of various colors, reflecting the green fjord. In summer, apple and apricot blossoms adorn the area, making it a gorgeous place to visit.

The fruit trees on both sides of Hardangerfjord are in full bloom. At the end of the fjord lies the famous recreational area of Ullensvang in Utonne and Loftus. Around 800 years ago, monks came to this area and planted apple and apricot trees, which bloom in May and bear fruit in summer.

There are also many spectacular waterfalls along Hardangerfjord, as well as notable landscapes such as Hardangervidda National Park and Norway's third-largest glacier, Vogelfonner.

Rüsselfjord is located in the south of Norway, with its entrance near Stavanger on the west coast of the country. The river winds its way through cliffs and majestic mountains, creating a serene and beautiful scene akin to a poem and as majestic as a symphony.

Deep inland and far from the sea, the water of Rüsselfjord is crystal clear and green, resembling a mirror. The cliffs and rocks on both sides of the river showcase nature's magical work.

Among the gigantic rocks lining the fjord, the 600-meter-high cliff Brekestren stands out as the most captivating sight. Standing atop these enormous rocks, one feels as if floating in the air, while being overwhelmed by the sheer force and vitality of nature.

Fjords are the most iconic landscapes of Norway, so much so that geologists refer to Norway as a "fjord country." Only by immersing oneself in the winding and twisting fjords along the country's west coast and appreciating the countless glacial remnants that shape this fjord landscape can one truly experience the enchanting allure of this magical country.
